Forestry

One of the ways I fill my time is in trying to manage a forest. It's not a colossal forest but it's a big enough project for me.

Recently I was working on creating some inspection paths through some evergreens - the forest is intended to be a commercial operation so we need to be able to get through it to assess the health of the crop - and I realised I was out of what I used to call 'marker tape'. A quick rummage on Google revealed that what I should have been calling it is actually 'flagging' tape. A search for 'marker tape' resulted in lots of 'crime scene' stuff and although some my call my management of the site a crime, it wasn't exactly what I was after.

But the sites that were selling the flagging tape were also selling tools. Those that know me well know I have a weakness in this area, and I've been known to lose hours in the aisles of hardware and DIY shops, gazing in wonder at tools I'll never even have a use for. So when I see ads and reviews for things that actually look like I could make use of them, it's very hard for me to look away. Thankfully I was on the train this morning and my final stop made me put the phone down.

Some of the 'toys' I'd love to get my hands on - if I have to explain why you might be on the wrong page:

Also on the Gerber site, they have this little bag-o-tricks. It's potentially very useful but it looks a bit like something from a movie about serial killers or torturers. The accompanying (and slightly deranged!) sales copy doesn't help to dispel that image either. Also, I suspect, it'd be just a bit on the heavy side for carrying around the forest all day!
